Cyclefilm VeloSocials 2010

February 19th, 2010

What started with a few good men and women coming together to cycle in the warm winter climate of Southern California this January, turned into a fully blown test for the first of many more Cyclefilm VELOSOCIALS. The concept is sound - rack up quality miles with even better quality people, tie in local cycling talent from physio to bike fitting to custom apparel. Sprinkle a generous amount of socializing. Then, just let it marinate and enjoy!
vogue

I’m combining each VeloSocial with a significant event on my calendar. This year is especially busy as I will be at the Spring Classics for the first time. After that, I’m skipping the Giro in favor of the Tour of California. Then it’s back to Europe to film a charity event that has become one of my favorite 10 days of the year - the annual Fireflies Ride form Geneva to Cannes. July is all about Le Tour - you never know what you gonna get, but it’s always worth it!  September is reserved for the Trade Shows Eurobike & Interbike. October is Etape du Tour Recon time usually followed by 2 months of hard core DVD editing.  Finally, Jan/Feb/Mar is my off-season, before things heat up again with a vengeance in April!

So, without any further ado, here are the preliminary Cyclefilm VELOSOCIAL dates for the rest of the year:

MAY 8-15: VeloSocial NorCal with TeamWill - Sacramento, CA
Details: TBD
The perfect VeloSocial for anyone getting ready to follow the Tour of California May 16-23.

JUNE 5-12: VeloSocial Switzerland with the Fireflies - Geneva, CH
Details: TBD
This is my annual Sufferfest. I’ve been doing this for the past 3 years and it’s one of my favorite places to ride a bike. My personal aim of this Velosocial is to rid myself of the cycling bug. Why? For the 10 days after this ride camp, I’m glued to my camera filming the annual Fireflies Ride from Geneva to Cannes and through the most epic part of the Alps. It’s an honor to be part of this ride but my heart is bleeding with every frame I film as I dont have the time to ride myself.

JUNE 26 - JULY 3: VeloSocial France, Cote’d Azur/Cannes
Details: TBD
Pretty much the same deal as the previous VeloSocial. As I’ve just been ‘driving’ through the best part of the Alps, it’s time to finish the ‘foreplay’ and start cycling myself again.

AUG 28 - SEP 4: VeloSocial Germany, Kempten (Friedrichshafen)
Details: TBD
It’s time for Eurobike, but this year, do bring your bike! I’ve been going to Eurobike for the past 4 years and I’m always amazed how few people take advantage of the awesome riding that this region has to offer. This is where I grew up, so come and join me in my backyard.

catsI’d think there is room to put on a couple more VeloSocials. I’d like to do one in Italy and one other ‘exotic’ location, but I dont want to commit to anything yet. Be sure to check back soon to see if I managed to organize a couple more.

If you are interested in participating in any of the VeloSocials, please get in touch with me:

Email

I will soon publish a lot more details on each of the events.
In the meantime, don’t dream it, do it!

POTENTIAL: An unfulfilled capacity to improve

January 24th, 2010

Everything that has a beginning has an end - reads the tag line of the Matrix 3 - Revolutions.  Although I’d like to think that the end of the first Cyclefilm ‘VeloSocial’ Ride & Training Camp (see previous postings) is actually the start of something much bigger…

Since Feb. 2009, I’ve been on a little bit of a mission to find a US home for Cyclefilm.  My quest to find the holy trinity of epic roads, year around good riding weather and a passionate cycling community has taken me to a lot of great places over the past 12 months, but only a few are able to combine the 3 success criteria as well as San Diego county.

Don’t get me wrong, I love riding in NorCal, Colorado and pretty much all over Europe (still need to get myself to Down Under one of these days).  There are great roads and passionate people throughout the world, but what can I say, I’m a sucker for sunshine and warm weather without giving up on challenging riding and a good dose of socializing.

photo01321

A few administrative things have to still fall into place over the coming few months before I can make a definitive decision, but there is a high likelihood that I will be back in San Diego very soon to build a permanent home for Cyclefilm outside of Germany and the UK.

However, the decision is not all down to roads, weather and people.  There is the 4th dimension I’d like to call POTENTIAL, which stretches beyond my skill-set of cycling videography.

As an active cyclist, I can’t help but feel obligated to grow the sport beyond my boundaries and assist local communities realize their unfulfilled capacity.  In other words, when cycling is ready to seriously launch into the San Diego orbit, I’d like to be on board for the ride and feel like I was part of the group that lit the fuse!

In my opinion, the San Diego region has absolutely massive potential to grow into one of the hot beds for cycling in the country.  The Triathlon market is already huge and the area is obviously known for its surf and beach culture, but once you start heading inland, away from the ocean boardwalks and beach cafes, there is an undiscovered bounty of challenging roads begging to be ridden. photo01331 These roads are perfectly laid out to cater to what’s called the Sportive/Gran Fondo rider. The Fondo rider likes a competitive challenge, maybe a step up from the Charity Ride - but doesnt necessarily want to elbow his/her way through the elite racing scene.

The Sportive/Fondo segment is the 500 pound gorilla of road cycling if you ask me!  Strangely enough, it’s the segment that’s most often not catered to correctly or overlooked altogether.  Add to that the women’s cycling segment that’s almost completely ignored across the board, and you come back full circle to my 4th dimension: POTENTIAL - The unfulfilled capacity to improve.  San Diego county has all the ingredients in place - great weather, enthusiastic people and plenty of back-country roads to ‘play’ on.

What’s next?  Cycle shops, cafe owners, event organizers and local councils need to start cooking up more dishes that appeal to women cyclists and Gran Fondo riders.  As for Cyclefilm, we’re getting ready to help out in the kitchen!  Bon Appétit.

Are you a San Diego cyclist? What would you like to see happen in your region to launch cycling into orbit?

Time to say goodbye: A look back at VeloSocial, San Diego

January 22nd, 2010

RedRidersAs it’s often the case, I stumble from one project into the next without having the luxury of getting all my ducks in a row to ensure a smooth transition.  So, it’s at this point that I’d like to thank the good people at B&L Bikes for sorting me out with a rental bike, helmet and shoes in the eleventh hour!

Literally eleven hours later, I was on the road with the San Diego Tour de Cure riders putting in a training ride for their big day April 17th.  Before we set off, I met part of the organizing committee Rich Poser, Bruce Berrest, Julio Borja and Ben Wojcik among others.  We rode the 30mile loop with about 20 cyclists - some of them Red Riders (cyclists with diabetes).  I put together this short video clip to promote the Tour de Cure event to help raise awareness and funding to find a cure:

Meanwhile, my friend Cameron who works with European Cycling Tour Operator La Fuga hooked up with the local fast men - the Swami’s of Encinitas.  As it says on their website, be sure to bring your A-game - they are certainly not kidding around!  The famous Wednesday ride out and back through Camp Pendleton is something left to the full timers and racing enthusiasts.  Still, a great way to make new connections with passionate cyclists.  We met and rode with TeamType1 rider James Stout, ex Rock Racing Lana Atchley and all around nice guy Simon Mozcorp aka Diesel Engine!

photo0165Speaking of passionate cyclists, we also had the pleasure of meeting Greg Hoffman who flew in from Pennsylvania for a few days of SoCal sun.  Greg joined us on several rides, but I’ll let him tell the story. Click to read his blog for details.

As part of the Tour de Cure promotion and thanks to Ben Wojcik, I got reeled in for a short segment on Sean Mellor’s Bicycle Radio.  You can listen to the show here.  Right after I was on the show, Tour de Cure Red Rider Alexis Pollack was on the show as well.  Alexis is a very inspiring young lady living with diabetes.  She writes a very informative and motivational blog.  Read it here.

This summary write-up wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the now infamous ride to Bonk Town USA.  Fortunately, I managed to wiggle my way out of this ride - a proposed 100+ miler from Encinitas to Mt.Palomar and back.  I knew this wasnt for me this early in the year.  Yet, 3 intrepid men, Cameron, Simon and Jeff took on the challenge.  Read up on their adventure on Jeff’s Blog Bikecrave.

I guess this is the perfect time and place to add the fabulous Emily Baker into the story.  Emily is an aspiring Physio/Massage Therapist in training.  She offered to provide relief from tired cycling legs through after ride massages.  Let me tell you - it worked!!  I’m sitting here fighting fit and ready to kick up my training plan into the next gear, no doubt due to in part to Emily’s excellent recovery massages.

Coffee stop

From a Velosocial technical point of view, it was a pleasure to meet Eric Bowen from BikFit and Derek Wiback from Pactimo Custom Apparel.  Both Eric and Derek hosted short seminars on Bike Fitting and Cycling Apparel.  Also thanks to Eric for his Stone Brewery recommendation.  We enjoyed the local brews and appetizers.  Derek joined us for Italian dinner at Vigilucci’s. He’s a top notch family man and one of the few soccer fans I’ve ever met in the US.

You may think this was all a big jolly - well it was - but I did manage to squeeze in a bit of business as well.  I was lucky to meet Emily and Gabriel from imotomedia and mylifeonthebike.  Five years of running Cyclefilm and I can honestly say I have met only a handful of people as passionate about cycling and film making as Emily and Gabriel.  Watch this space, there may be a co-production in the making…

So, 10 days of riding and socialising are coming to an end, but not before one last outing at our chosen local D Street Bar & Grill, Encinitas to give Cameron a proper send-off back to the UK.  We had a great turn out and even attracted ex TT World Champion Mari Holden together with local cycle stars James Stout, Julia Lafranchise and Lana Atchley.

My last day of the VeloSocial came to an end at the Tour de Cure kick-off party at Phil’s BBQ.  It was great to see everyone again which we rode and drank beers with over the past 2 weeks.  A shame that the bad weather kept Martha from Action Wipes and Sean from Bicycle Radio from attending the party.  You can’t argue with an El Nino storm.  Better safe than sorry.  Nonetheless, the combination of epic roads, warm weather and great people has made a big impression on me, but I’ll tell you a bit more about this and my plans for Cyclefilm in the next post…

Day 5 - Meet Alvin

Meet Alvin

Meet Alvin

Cameron’s got the sniffles. “I’m going to hang out at the coffee shop all day” he says.  Well, I know that’s not going to happen.  It tell him once he gets back on the bike, things will feel good again.  It’s the defining moment of any training camp.  When you’re hurting off the bike and feeling like a king on the bike, you’re doing well!

The clock strikes 9:30am.  Simon and Greg are knocking at the door urging us to get in gear and ride up the coast as planned.  After yesterdays rain, I’m eager to continue work on the tan lines and we saddle up quickly.  45mins later Cameron pulls over at the Carlsbad Starbucks…is he really that beat??  For me, I knew taking an easy day will come in handy soon.  Today is my day to motor.  With Cameron chilling at the Cafe, we ride on to the northern most end of the Marine Base - Camp Pendleton.  Simon launches the afterburners and leads the charge back home as the Marine helicopters circle above us.  We hammer through a few Tank Crossings and before we know it we’re off the base again and cruise along the beautiful Pacific coastline towards Encinitas.

Meanwhile, Cameron got bored with drinking coffee (I knew it) and decided to cycle south for an hour, then back for another in an effort to catch up with us on the way back.  As he pulls into the Hotel having clocked 3hrs (calling it a recovery day), Greg and I are not that far behind with 3.5hrs on the clock.  Day 5 - Mission Accomplished.  Now it’s on to a chilled ride tomorrow - whatever that means - to get ready for the Stagecoach Century on Saturday.

What’s coming up on the Cyclefilm Ride/Social Camp?  For starters, Derek from Pactimo Apparel will host a seminar tomorrow evening 7-8pm here at the Days Inn, Encinitas.  Then on Sunday, we’re riding with the San Diego Tour de Cure riders again, followed by a video segment with Emily from MyLifeOnTheBike.  Keep an eye out for that one.  We’re also bracing for big storms to hit as of Monday, so our little camp may come to a sudden, ugly stop.  Nonetheless, 8 out of 10 riding days ain’t bad.

Get in touch with me if you’re around and still want to meet up, either for a ride, a drink or dinner.

RIDE ON!

Day 4: Rain, Train and Automobiles

January 14th, 2010

- CLICK HERE TO SEE THE UPDATED RIDE SCHEDULE -

Wed, Jan.13th - Day 4 - Waking up to the sound of rain while on a training camp is like seeing the red and blue lights of a police car in your back mirror!  4 letter words start flying out your mouth uncontrollably…  I guess we stretched our good weather luck far enough the past few days, now it’s time to face the music - eeh rain!

It wasn’t all that bad really today.  A few bands of light sprinkles moving on shore followed by blue skies at 2pm just as we pulled back into the hotel.  Isn’t it ironic…Alanis missed out on a couple lines of cycling lyrics in her song.  Tomorrow, we’ll be back to Sheryl’s “Every day is a winding road” with more cycling SoCal style.

Thanks to B&L Bikes for pulling on a couple brand spanking new tires after I shredded them pretty good on some glass today.  Cameron also punctured.  I hope we’re done now with the flats.  Get it all out of the way in one go.  Speaking of glass…I did notice above average sharp objects on the side of the road.  It’s almost like people pour that stuff into the bike lanes!?

That Stagecoach Century is looming on the horizon.  Saturday is the day.  I think I should be OK.  Cameron is already flying and it’s only January.  Someone give this boy a pro contract!!  Anyone else riding the Stagecoach?  100miles out-and-back through the desert - tempting, I know! Haha

OK, time for bed after Oggi’s Pizza and beer.  Need a full 8 hours to digest all that cheese.  Don’t forget, it’s Eric’s Bike Fitting clinic tomorrow, Thursday, Jan.14th, 6:30pm right here at the Ritz Carlton, Encinitas aka the Days Inn.  Please call me (702.682.2348) or email if you’re stopping by.  We’re heading out for drinks and food afterwards in Encinitas.  Join us.

Day 3 - The Palomar Epic

January 13th, 2010
View from Palomar

Here we are again, home sweet home that is the Encinitas Days Inn.  I’m in the mobile Cyclefilm office - a 3×3ft table in the corner - tweeting away on my laptop, Cameron barely alive in bed, rubbing his sore legs and applying copious amounts of chamois cream to strategic areas of his backside.  “OK, stop the crying and start writing your Palomar Adventure for the Blog” I bark at Cameron to get him moving.  He grabs his laptop and starts hitting the keys reluctantly…

Meanwhile, I’m not sure if I should be laughing or crying for getting out of today’s sufferfest. When Cameron and Jeff told me their ride story over beer and chicken at our Encinitas local D Street Bar&Grill, I could feel a slight sting of jealousy.  Anyway, my mission today was to go for a gentle ride along the coast, hitting the bike shops to test ride and decide on my new toy to keep stateside.  Can’t handle these overpriced baggage charges any longer.  3 flights a year = a Cannondale 2010 SuperSix.  Easy math really!

After lunch though, I felt a sudden burst of energy mixed with a splash of guilt.  With Cameron and the boys out in the mountains tearing up the roads, I countered the urge to ride with a 2hr hammer session to Lake Hodges and back. If Emily hadn’t been waiting for me back at the hotel for physio/massage, I would have kept going.  I love late afternoon rides.  Well, to be continued some other day.

dsc00041

Simon riding up Palomar

Ouch, that hurt!  Must have done a bit of damage to the quads hammering back from the lake.  Emily is about to become a California certified massage therapist.  With 300+ massage hours in her arms & hands, she knows how to rub you back in shape for another beating tomorrow.  I wonder what the boys are up to?  They left at 10am…it’s now 4:30pm, and I havent heard a peep.  That’s when the phone rings: “Pick us up, we’re done!” Surely they must be nearby with a flat and no spare tube, I’m thinking.  Not this time, this is a true Broom Wagon type of call.  With over 90miles and 8,000ft (2,500m) of climbing in their legs, they are still 40miles from home! “What on earth kinda route did you take?” I shout down the phone line. “Don’t ask - we’ve bonked big time and are scoffing down food at some bar outside Valley Center.  Jeff wanted to take the ’scenic route’ back - not a good idea it turns out!”

View from Palomar

View from Palomar

Massage over, Emily to the rescue.  I would have joined in on the mission, if it wasn’t for my meeting with Ben @weezyrider and the good people at the ADA Tour de Cure and a short appearance on Sean Mellor’s Bicycle Radio in 45min!  At this point, let me insert Cameron’s story.  He just emailed me his account of the ‘action’ and is back on the chamois cream and a second episode of Family Guy:

Good evening bloggers.  Today the Cyclefilm training camp raised the bar with an epic ride!  Keeping in line with the Euro cycling rules, the ride rolled out of Encinitas at 10am.  The idea was for an out-and-back ride up Mt.Palomar with Simon and Jeff @bikecrave.  Derek from Pactimo Apparel and James Stout from TeamType 1 joined us as well for the first few miles before heading out on their own loops.  This left us 3 amigos to conquer Palomar - a climb that I would rank on par with Mt.Ventoux in the Provence!  Palomar is a beautiful, Tour de France worthy climb, and I regret not taking more pictures, but when you’re in the red zone for most of the climb, the last thing on your mind is taking pictures!  It’s almost 2pm when we summit and it’s all looking good until Jeff decides to take a right turn (for the worse) on Pala Road after descending Palomar.  This ’scenic loop’ through Couser Canyon with dwindeling light, food and water supplies will prove to be the end of us 2hrs later, as we literally cycle into the mirage that is the Casa Reveles mexican bar to order emergency food and drink.  Big thanks to Emily for the Broom Wagon rescue and subsequent massage back at the hotel!  Any Pro Team would be well served to have her on the team.

Day 3 - Mission Accomplished!
Ride with us before our legs fall off.  We’ll be here in Encinitas until the 20th

Ride Camp, Day 2 - more 70 & sunny!

January 12th, 2010

It’s coming up to midnigth and I just managed to clear my inbox! I hope you wont be too mad if I keep todays post a bit shorter.  Need to get in a bit of z-time and level my legs.  Cameron put the hammer down on me today.  He saw my 25C Roubaix tyres this morning and smiled: “You’re gonna stick to the road like flies to sh*t”, and he was right!  He even dropped me on basic descends - something I didn’t even know was possible!  On the bright side, he punctured 50miles into the ride - karma catching up with him!

Today, I especially would like to thank the weather for being so kind to us.  I’ve never ridden in 25C+ (80F) temperatures in January and I must say I’m loving it.  To be repeated next year!!

So, we’ve got an action packed 8 more days of riding ahead of us.  Tomorrow, Cameron will ride with Jeff and Simon up to Mt.Palomar.  I bowed out after todays beating and opted for a more casual stroll up and down the coast. Let’s see who I’ll run into…

Walking the Line! Encinitas Ride/Social Camp - Day 1

January 11th, 2010

I’m either imagining it or I’m really hearing Johnny Cash as I pull into the parking lot of the Mira Costa Community College.  I roll down my window a bit further: “…I keep a close watch on this heart of mine, I keep my eyes wide open all the time…“  Yes, it’s Cash’s signature sound and voice.  “I Walk the Line” is playing on one of the Tour de Cure rider’s car stereo.  I love the sound of Cash in the morning!  This is going to be a good day.

It’s January 10th, 8:15am, and I’m not even thinking about putting on leg warmers because this is Southern California.  San Diego’s infamous “70 and sunny” weather phenomenon already greeted me when I first opened the hotel room door to help me pick today’s wardrobe. Arm warmers and gillet will do, although as I will find out 1hr into the ride, even those cycling basics are too much to wear today!

I park the car and walk up to say Hi to the group of Tour de Cure and Red Riders (cyclists with diabetes).  Everyone is suiting up, ready to ride the Tour de Cure 30mile route.  Bruce Berrest greets me with a big smile.  Bruce is the Committee Chair of the Tour de Cure to support the American Diabetes Association.  He introduces me to Red Riders Rich and Julio who are putting on the annual event (More info here).  Then I meet Twitter friends @weezyrider aka Ben Wojcik, @bikecrave aka Jeff Bean and @BikFit aka Eric Bowen.  We decide to move the small talk to the road, we got some riding to do!

“We may have missed a turn!” says Jeff.  The fun rolling roads through Rancho Santa Fe on the second half of the TDC route tempted us to hammer it just that little bit too hard to bust through a turn. Where is that ride sheet Bruce gave me? Hmm, I guess it’s Garmin to the rescue.  Jeff beats me to it by launching Google maps on his iPhone, but the Rancho ‘labyrinth’ has us guessing for a while.  20mins later we’re the first riders back at Mira Costa CC with 2miles less than anticipated.  Oops!  Our inadvertent ’short cut’ draws some banter from the rest of the group as they roll in 5mins after us.  No harm done, it’s smiles all around.  When the sun’s out like this and you’re riding with your friends, it’s Mission Accomplished!  One day down, ten more to go!

This was a perfect start to the Cyclefilm ride/social camp thanks to the Tour de Cure and Red Riders.  I’ll be cycling with Rich, Julio and Co again next Sunday Jan.17th, same time, same place, so come and join us.  If you want to ride the Tour de Cure on April 17th, please visit the site for info.  There’s a 10mile family ride, 30mi, 70mi and 100mi ride - something for everyone!

WHAT’S NEXT?
Monday, Jan.11th, Cameron & I will start riding from the Hotel (Days Inn - Encinitas) at 10am.
We’re doing a 70miler at steady pace:
Call me if you want to join or meet up somewhere along the route: 702.682.2348

On Tuesday, we kick things up a notch by doing an out and back ride to Mt. Palomar.  We’ll leave around 10am from the Hotel.  Again, please get in touch if you want to join.  Emily (@emily_baker) will be here at the hotel after the ride for physio/massage service.

We’re also scheduled to ride the original 2009 Tour of California Stage 8 over Mt.Palomar on Jan.19th.  Don’t miss it.

See you tomorrow.
